Making Your Move Seamless When Buying a New Construction Home
Any move comes with a lot of stress and chaos. Moving into a newly built home is both easier and more complex than moving into an existing home. If you’ve been hunting through listing after listing of new homes for sale and finally found the perfect spot, it’s now time to get ready to get moving! Even if your luxury home builders are just now breaking ground on your new home, there are plenty of things you can get started on to make your move a better one. Try these steps to make moving into your new home as seamless as possible.
Create A Timeline
Knowing how long you have until the big milestone dates will help you get everything organized. It’s also a great way to help you remain more flexible to handle the timing vagaries of a new construction home. Start by defining the important dates as you know them: the date your house is scheduled to be completed, the date your current home needs to be vacated, and travel time (if you’re coming from another region).
Stay Up-To-Date
Buying a new home generally comes with a less certain move-in date than you would enjoy when purchasing an existing home. That, in turn, can create a need for greater flexibility in regard to moving out of your current home. Unfortunately, weather and other uncontrollable factors can alter a completion date. In order to prepare for this potential scenario, make sure there is flexibility built in to your moving timeline. On an ongoing basis, it also helps to keep in touch with your luxury home builders. This will help you follow how the building process is going and keep you updated in case you need to shift moving plans.
Prepare Your Current Home
Any move is a great time to go through all your belongings. Whether you’ve lived in your home for two years or twenty, it’s easy to accumulate stuff. Use your upcoming move as a reason to go through your household and get rid of things you don’t need or never use. We suggest going one room at a time and dividing everything into three categories: things to keep, things to trash, and things to sell or donate. Having the time to do this while your luxury home builders do their work means you should have plenty of time to get organized and put on a garage sale. Getting rid of things before you move means there is less to haul around, which can help you save some money on moving expenses.
Start Packing
After you’ve gone through your home to tidy and pare down, it’s time to start packing. This doesn’t need to be done months ahead of time, of course, but starting a month or more ahead of time means you can take a leisurely approach. This is also a great way to ensure all of your fragile items are packed carefully — not missed during a last-minute rush. Start with seasonal items and holiday decor, then move on to other things that are used infrequently, including some of your clothing, decor, some kitchenware, and so on.
This is also a great time to start planning where everything will go in your new home. Room dimensions are likely to be pretty different from your current home, so you’ll want to take measurements of your furniture and start mapping out rooms in the new house. This way, you can add labels or color code boxes according to where everything will go in your new home.
Transfer Everything
As you get closer to your home’s completion, your move-in date will become more certain. At that point, you can start transferring over everything that needs to be switched. Things like moving your utilities and cable package to your new home can often be scheduled for a future date. Other details, like updating your bank accounts and drivers license may need to wait until you’ve actually moved. This is also the time to schedule inspections, prepare for closing, and gather all of your important documents in preparations for moving.
